    LANDSCAPING TIPS

March - Begin spring clean-up by clearing out dead leaves from gutters, planting beds and any other planting areas.  Apply fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicides to control crabgrass. Cultivate your planting beds and re-mulch to help them remain healthy and disease free. Edge your beds for crisp clean lines and to help prevent the grass from spreading into your landscape beds.

April - Now is the time to cut the grass and remove winterburn - the dead, brown areas that make your lawn look dull and unattractive. Do this early to promote vigorous new growth. Plant grass seed in bare or severely damaged yard areas. Plant woody ornamental and evergreens as soon as the soil is workable.

May - May is flower month. Flowers can be used in masses for effect, as borders at bed edges, in window boxes, tubs or hanging baskets.  Prepare the soil for flower beds by adding fertilizer and organic material to improve aeration and drainage. Consider height, color combinations, timing of bloom, textures, background and borders when choosing flowers. Frequent care is needed throughout the growing season to maintain healthy, vigorous plants. Watering is essential: slow deep soaking is the preferred method. Remember to pinch off spent blooms to maintain the health and beauty of flowering plants.

JuneNature is at the peak of her beauty now.  Insects are very active.  Be observant to keep pests such as grubs or other insects from destroying your lawn and flowers.  Use soluble fertilizer once a week on flowers, watch for signs of drying and water as needed.  This should be the prettiest month for your lawn.

July -  During hot July weather, be sure to mow your lawn at the appropriate height (3 inches).  This reduces water loss and helps lower soil temperatures.  Leave clippings on the law to decompose.  For best growth of turf, water your lawn to a depth of 4 to 6 inches.  Then do not water the lawn for about one week.  Proper watering means deep soaking.  Light sprinkling is ofter harmful, especiallon on lawns.  Wet the soil to the bottom of the roots (5 to 6 inches deep). A brown or grayish cast over lawns can be caused by dull or improperly adjusted mower bladestha shred grass rather than cut it.  Make sure your blades are sharpened.  When planting trees, install them at least 6 fee away from sidewalks and concrete pools, so growing roots do not crack the concrete.

August - When water flowers and lawns during hot weather, do it early in the morning.  Otherwise, much of the water will evaporate before the plants get to use it.  Grass nees watering if footprints remain visible or the overall color turns gray-green.  Be sure to mow the lawn before going on vacation.  If you will be gone two weeks, arrange to have it cut while you are away.  If you don't, too much of the top growth will be removed at the next mowing.  Removal of more than 1/3 of the growth at one time weakens the plant.  If you plan to do some landscape planting this fall, now is a good time to decide on the  plants to use and how to arrange them.  Plan to rejuvenate or p lant home lawns in the fall.

September - This is a good month to seed/overseed, lime, fertilize, aerate, verticut and dethatch your lawn.  Rejuvenate faded annual beds with the fresh colors of fall-flowering mums, pansies and ornamental cabbage and kale - these plants add beauty to your garden beds during the fall and winter months.  In anticipation of the promise of next spring, now is the time to plant spring flowering bulbs.

October  - It is clean-up time for leaves and debris.  Trim back perennials (except roses).  Pile loose mulch on tender plants that require protection.  Rake back mulch in your flower gardens and fertilize your plants for winter.  Seeding/overseeding, liming, fertilizing, aerating, verticuting and dethatching your lawn can also be done in October. Now is the time to plant all spring flowering blubs such as tulips, crocus and daffodils.  Bring your house plants back indoors.  You may want to spray them first so that bugs don't come in with them.  Also a good time to add fertilizer.  The holidays are just around the corner, it is time to start thinking about holiday decorations.

November - Depending on weather conditions, November is still a good month to seed and aerate your lawn.  If you have water gardens, cover them with pond netting to keep leaves from falling into them, remove dead foliage off plants and set them to the bottom of the pond.  Plan for your holiday decoration needs for upcoming parties or just to make your home look extra special during the holiday months.  We provide design, set-up, take down and packaging of your holidy decorations.
