LANDSCAPING TIPS
SPRING | SUMMER | FALL

JUNE
Nature is at the peak of her beauty now. Insects are very active. Be observant to keep pests such as grubs or other insects from destroying your lawn and flowers. Use soluble fertilizer once a week on flowers, watch for signs of drying and water as needed. This should be the prettiest month for your lawn.

JULY

During hot July weather, be sure to mow your lawn at the appropriate height (3 inches). This reduces water loss and helps lower soil temperatures. Leave clippings on the lawn to decompose.

For best growth of turf, water you lawn to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Then do not water the lawn for about one week.

Proper watering means deep soaking. Light sprinkling is often harmful, especially on lawns. Wet the soil to the bottom of the roots (5 to 6 inches deep).

A brown or grayish cast over lawns can be caused by dull or improperly adjusted mower blades that shred grass rather than cut it. Make sure your blades are sharpened.

When planting trees, install them at least 6 feet away from sidewalks and concrete pools, so growing roots do not crack the concrete.

AUGUST

When watering flowers and lawns during hot weather, do it early in the morning. Otherwise, much of the water will evaporate before the plants get to use it.

Grass needs watering if footprints remain visible or the overall color turns gray-green.

Be sure to mow the lawn before going on vacation. If you will be gone over two weeks, arrange to have it cut while you are away. If you don't, too much of the top growth will be removed at the next mowing. Removal of more then 1/3 of the growth at one time weakens the plant.

If you plan to do some landscape planting this fall, now is a good time to decide on the plants to use and how to arrange them.

Plan to rejuvenate or plant home lawns in the fall.
